Lacrosse
Onondaga County is the birthplace of lacrosse. From the Native Americans who invented the sport to the modern day NCAA Division I dynasty Syracuse University, our community has a deep rooted passion for the sport.

Sports & Recreation

The residents of Onondaga County and the surrounding area have access to a wide variety of sports teams and recreational activities. The following are among the many sporting facilities and recreational/leisure opportunities that contribute to the area’s quality of life:

  • More than 50 state, county and city parks and several nature centers provide opportunities for walking, hiking, biking and other outdoor activities. Annual attendance at county parks is more than 3 million.

  • 40 golf courses - more than any other area in the Northeast.

  • Winter offers cross-country and downhill skiing, ice-skating, ice fishing, snowmobiling as well as the Syracuse WinterFest.

  • The Finger Lakes, a Great Lake, the historic Erie Canal and numerous other fresh water lakes and rivers offer many opportunities for boating, sailing, fishing and other water sports.

  • Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park, an Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited institution, is open year round.

  • Alliance Bank Stadium seats 11,000 spectators and is home to the Syracuse SkyChiefs, an AAA affiliate of MLB's Washington Nationals. The Stadium has hosted several major concert events including Dave Matthews Band, Bob Dylan and The Boston Pops.
  • The Carrier Dome, home which seats 50,000, is the only domed stadium in the Northeast. The Dome is home to Syracuse University Athletics including basketball, football, lacrosse and track teams. In addition to Syracuse University sports, the Carrier Dome is the venue for other sports and cultural events.
  • The 6,230 seat War Memorial hosts the Syracuse Crunch hockey team, an AAA affiliate of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks.

  • Onondaga Community College recently completed the construction of the SRC Arena, a 60,000 square foot multipurpose facility with flexible seating for 6,500 people. The arena will host everything from sporting and community events to national concerts and shows.
  • The New York State Fair is the longest running State Fair in the country, and annually attracts about one million people from throughout the Northeast.
