Local Government

Onondaga County was established in 1794 and is comprised of the City of Syracuse, 19 towns, 15 villages and the Onondaga Indian Reservation. 

Onondaga County

County Executive Joanne M. Mahoney is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Budget Officer of the County government. The County Comptroller is responsible for accounting and auditing of receipts and disbursements and is the Chief Accounting Officer. The County Executive, County Comptroller, County Clerk, Sheriff and District Attorney are all elected to four-year terms. The County is divided into 17 county legislative districts. Legislators are elected to two-year terms.

City of Syracuse

Mayor Stephanie A. Miner is the Chief Executive Officer of the City of Syracuse. The Common Council acts as the legislative body for the City. The President and four members are elected at-large or city-wide for a term of four years; the other five members are district councilors, elected within each of the five Syracuse common council districts and serve a two year term.
