    • Governing Magazine names Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney a Public Official of the Year: Probably the most prominent of Mahoney’s Syracuse-friendly decisions, though, was to push back on a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) consent order aimed at cleaning up Syracuse’s Onondaga Lake, considered to be one of the most polluted in the country.     • Central New York really cleans up in new jobs study: With almost 10,000 “clean economy” jobs, Central New York has one of the most intensely green economies of any region in country, according to a study from the Brookings Institution. Read more
    • Welch Allyn hands off research incubator to Syracuse University: Medical device manufacturer Welch Allyn is transferring a research incubator it founded three years ago to Syracuse University. The change will allow the incubator, known as Blue Highway, to expand its efforts to develop innovations beyond health care to other areas of science and technology. Read more
    • Frankfurt Airport chooses Sensis Corporation in DeWitt for upgrade project: The Frankfurt Airport in Germany has awarded Sensis Corp. a contract to expand and upgrade a system of sensors that allows operators to track the movement of aircraft and vehicles on the airport’s grounds. Read more
    • Four CNY companies getting federal grants totalling nearly $200,000: Three Syracuse companies and one from Ithaca will receive a total of nearly $200,000 in government grants today to demonstrate how products they are developing can improve air quality and water systems. Read more
    • Onondaga Community College installing solar panels: Onondaga Community College has begun work to install solar panels on the roof of the Whitney Applied Technology Center. The solar panels will provide the college with about 25,000 kilowatts hours of electricity, or about the equivalent of powering three to four homes. Read more
    • Companies unite in Syracuse to develop brighter LED lights: Syracuse’s newest high-tech venture will manufacture improved lighting. A partnership of two small engineering companies and a Canadian LED (light emitting diode) light manufacturer announced a collaboration to design, manufacture and sell brighter, more energy-efficient LED lamps.     • Onondaga County and Syracuse are recognized by the EPA as a Top 10 Green Community: The EPA has announced that Onondaga County and Syracuse have been chosen as one of the 10 communities nationwide to be a Green Infrastructure Partner. The city and county are planning to complete 50 green infrastructure projects this year under the banner of Onondaga County's "Save the Rain" program. Read more
    • Governor Coumo Launches 'Recharge New York' Program Allowing Businesses to Buy Low Cost Power and Create Jobs: Under Recharge New York, companies will be awarded power contracts based on capital investment commitments, job retention and creation, consistency with regional economic development council priorities, and other factors. Businesses participating in the program must also demonstrate a commitment to maximizing energy efficiency. Read More

The center of upstate New York, Syracuse has been looked at as a leader in clean technologies for the entire New York State.     • New Tax Break Incentivizes Downtown Development: In March, the Onondaga County Legislature passed a new tax incentive enabling municipalities to grant tax exemptions for renovations of buildings with a mix of commercial and residential uses. Read More
