Upstate to spend $32M on converting vacant high rise into housing for student residents
Upstate will use $32 million in bonds issued by the Onondaga Civic Development Corporation to transform Townsend Tower, a vacant dowtown Syracuse high-rise into housing for Upstate students and medical residents. The building will be renamed Geneva Tower and will feature 40 one-bedroom units, 80 two-bedroom units and 19 four-bedroom units for a total of 276 beds. When renovations are complete, the building is expected to received LEED certification a the gold level,
Time Warner to add 76 network-monitoring jobs at East Syracuse
Time Warner Cable will be expanding its operations in East Syracuse to monitor and manage the cable networks for nearly 6 million customers in nine states. Time Warner Cable is pleased to announce the addition of these technical jobs to a Syracuse community that is increasingly a hotbed for high-tech economic development,” said Henry Hryckiewicz, president of network operations and engineering for Time Warner Cable’s East region. The East Syracuse location was chosen because of the infrastructure already in place. Currently, the East Syracuse operation serves more than 2 million customers in Upstate New York and New England. The East Region center will serve 5.9 million customers in an area from Maine to South Carolina.
Onondaga Community College to add new dormitory
Onondaga Community College will renovate a building on Onondaga Road into a 166-student dormitory to meet growing demand for campus housing.Construction on the H3 building, across the road from the main campus, will start this fall and be completed by the Fall 2012 semester, said college spokeswoman Amy Kremenek
Work under way on $20 million-plus expansion at Sysco in Van Buren
SYSCO Syracuse LLC, a food distribution company will spend more than $20 million expanding its Van Buren facility. The project will add 125,000 square feet to the facility and increase its freezer capacity. Sysco, which provides food to restaurants and institutions, employs approximately 500 people locally. The expansion will use local construction firms and trade professionals. Sysco is also examining new clean technologies and sustainable energy features for possible inclusion in the project.

The company projects the creation of 100 jobs in the next 5 years with the potential to create another 1,000 jobs indirectly, as ProTerra requires a local supply chain.
Tessy Plastics Renovates Facilities to Add 75,000 sq. ft. of Automated Assembly Operation Tessy is transforming 75,000 sq. ft. of existing warehouse space to an automated assembly operation for one of the company’s most successful products. The approximately $1.8 million expansion, which will accommodate anticipated growth of manufacturing operations, includes $300,000 for building renovation, $1.5 million for machinery and equipment, and $15,000 for other costs associated with the project. Tessy's existing plant received New York State Empire Zone benefits and its recent expansion benefitted from OCIDA tax exemptions.
O’Brien & Gere Become Anchor Tenant in New Downtown Syracuse Office BuildingO'Brien & Gere relocated its offices to downtown Syracuse's newest green building in Fall 2010. The 132,500-square-foot Washington Station building cost $28 million and took just over a year to construct. The project utilizes multiple green technologies and practices, such as daylighting, sustainable furniture and fittings, storm water management, low VOC paint, adhesives, and sealants; and more.
St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center Undertakes $220 Million Facilities Expansion
The 361,000 square foot expansion project, which will build a new emergency services building, operating room suites, intensive care unit, private patient rooms and a new data center, is the largest in the hospital’s 140-year history. OCDC used its bonding authority to secure financing for the hospital's expansion. It also represents the largest “green” healthcare construction project in Upstate New York. St. Joseph’s expansion will create 600 construction jobs and 200 new, permanent health care jobs.
Aspen Dental Management Inc. Constructs $5.62 Million Expansion of Headquarters in DeWittThe 46,626-square-foot facility is under construction at 6600 Weighlock Drive, near the company’s headquarters at 281 Sanders Creek Parkway. The building is expected to be completed in August 2011. The new facility will be used for corporate administrative operations, training and a customer call center. OCIDA provided tax exemptions to facilitate the expansion. Aspen expects to create 126 local jobs over three years, about 175 employees will be moved to the building from leased offices in Salina and DeWitt. Currently, Aspen employs about 350 people in Onondaga County.
Light 4 Life Candles Begins Production of "Vessel - filled" Candles in Onondaga County
Light 4 Life Candles, a Canadian company, purchased the vacant Will & Baumer Inc. plant in Salina to make specialty candles. Light 4 Life Candles, LLC uses highly automated equipment to produce “vessel-filled” candles in high volume for the consumer market. The project represents a $3.49 million investment for the company, including $1 million for equipment. The company estimates it will create 60 jobs at the site within three years and may look to hire former Will & Baumer employees.
