Transportation

Onondaga County sits at the intersection of New York State’s two major interstate routes – I-90 (NYS Thruway) and I-81. Fifty percent (50%) of the populations of Canada and the United States are within 750 miles of Onondaga County. This strategic location coupled with excellent air and ground transportation systems have made Syracuse one of the leading distribution centers of the Northeast.

Syracuse is served by:

Highway: The County sits at the crossroads of Interstate 81 (a north-south route) and the NYS Thruway/I-90 (an east-west route.) These highways offer easy access to markets in the U.S. and Canada for the 150 trucking companies, including the nation's top 12 carriers of general freight, that use our roads.

Air: Over 130 passenger flights arrive and depart daily from the Syracuse Hancock International Airport, which is serviced by seven major airlines and several commuter lines. Six major air cargo companies, several regional carriers, forwarders and passenger airlines that offer air freight services also utilize the airport. Bus: CENTRO provides public transportation for the City of Syracuse and surrounding suburbs at a fare of $2. Onondaga Coach, Greyhound, Megabus, Syracuse & Oswego, and Adirondack Trailways also provide inter-city and interstate passenger service from the William F. Walsh Regional Transportation Center. Rail: CSX provides direct rail freight service to a variety of Northeastern markets from its major rail yard, intermodal terminal, and TRANSFLO terminal. Amtrak provides passenger rail transportation service from the William F. Walsh Regional Transportation Center. For more information about Amtrak's passenger service, please click here.

Water: The Port of Oswego is located on the southeast shore of Lake Ontario, 34 miles northwest of Syracuse. Nearly 120 vessels and over a million tons of cargo pass through the Port of Oswego on an annual basis. For more information on the Port of Oswego, please click here.

The New York State Canal System spans 524 miles and runs east-west across New York State, connecting the Niagara River with the Hudson River and ports south, including the Port of New York and New Jersey. The Canal System, which also links the Hudson River with Lake Champlain, Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes, the Niagara River and Lake Erie, passes through 25 counties and close to 200 villages, hamlets and towns.
