Water Resources

Business Facilities Magazine, a premier source for corporate real estate and site selection news, recently named Syracuse and the Central New York region among its seven best locations across the nation for companies seeking to move or expand, commenting that "Syracuse also has something that is increasingly rare and valuable: an abundant supply of fresh, potable water."

For over 110 years, the primary water supply for the City of Syracuse has been Skaneateles Lake, located approximately 20 miles southwest of the City. Onondaga County primarily uses Otisco and Skaneateles Lakes, supplementing those sources with water from Lake Ontario as needed. Onondaga County offers an unsurpassed quantity and quality of water, at a cost that is among the lowest in the nation.

Onondaga County Water Authority

As a Public Benefit Corporation created by the New York State Legislature, Onondaga County Water Authority’s (OCWA) primary purpose is to supply water to the residents and businesses in the Central New York Region for the improvement of their health, welfare and prosperity, in a manner protective of the resource and environment. For more information, please click here.

Metropolitan Water Board

The MWB’s mission is to purify, store and deliver the required amount of drinking water from Lake Ontario to meet the demands of residential, commercial, institutional and industrial consumers in Onondaga County, the City of Syracuse and Central New York. The Lake Ontario system has the capacity to produce up to 50 million gallons/day and store in excess of 110 million gallons of water for emergencies, including fire protection and periods of drought. The Onondaga County Water District, which is administered by the Metropolitan Water Board, serves the role of supplementing the area’s primary upland water sources of Skaneateles and Otisco Lakes.  For more information, please click here.

Syracuse Water Department

The Department is responsible for constructing, maintaining and operating all necessary and desirable facilities for the supply and distribution of a safe, potable water supply for the city of Syracuse. For more information, please click here.
