The United States Office of Management and Budget (OMB) defines metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas according to published standards that are applied to Census bureau data. In June 2003 the OMB announced new definitions based on the 2000 census. This announcement resulted in a change in Central New York statistical areas. Prior to 2003 the Syracuse MSA consisted of 4 counties, Onondaga, Cayuga, Madison, and Oswego. In 2003, Cayuga County was identified as a micropolitan area leaving 3 counties in the Syracuse MSA. In order to provide historical comparisons, data previously shown as MSA data will now be shown as "Syracuse-Auburn CSA".
Central New York data is a five county area including Onondaga, Cayuga, Madison, Oswego, and Cortland Counties.
The City of Syracuse New York is in the North Central part of Onondaga County.
